The Mystery of Architecture
This woodcut, "Covered Alley in Atrani, Coast of Amalfi" by M.C. Escher is from 1931, the same year Marple won her Fencing Championship. It illustrates passageways but hints at things just out of reach: hidden views, transformations even.
Should one take the left passage and rise? Or the right passage and descend? Decisions like these are everywhere in these films. It might be a moral choice on the part of a potential murderer, or simply the decision "who is the criminal?" (which even Marple gets wrong occasionally).
