The Vertigo of Choice
Looking more carefully, the choice is not so simple. There is also a stairway behind the viewer, representing the path already taken, the history that brings one to this place of choice. And there is even one to the immediate right, just visible in the frame. This is the trick of the mystery, to present a clue we might not notice until it is too late. And the trick of film: to hide the obvious off frame.
Here, then, is a profusion of paths, opening up the entire space into strange topologies. The white cuts on black are enough to delineate the perspective but also have an illusionist effect that encourages a sort of vertigo (especially as one looks up). This is one of those interior spaces that seems to mirror a mindset and whispers to us of narratives held within its architectonic grip.
